Vietnam's semiconductor industry targets a revenue of 100 billion USD by 2050

The Government has just issued the Semiconductor Industry Development Strategy until 2030, with a vision to 2050, with the goal of making Vietnam an important center in the global semiconductor industry.

What is a semiconductor chip?

Semiconductor chips, or integrated circuits (ICs), are important components of modern technology, created by integrating billions of small electronic components such as transistors and diodes on a single piece of material. semiconductor (usually silicon). Thanks to its high integration and ability to perform many different functions, semiconductor chips are widely used in devices such as microprocessors, memory, mobile phones and computers, playing an essential role in the development of modern technology.

Formula for developing the semiconductor industry in Vietnam

In the issued strategy, the formula C = SET + 1 is emphasized, in which "C" stands for Chip, revolving around the main factors: S (Specialized) - specialized chip, E (Electronics) - electronics industry and T (Talent) - human resources. The "+1" part represents our commitment to attracting foreign investment, helping Vietnam strengthen its position in the semiconductor supply chain.

This strategy is based on the "X+1" global model, when countries developing the semiconductor industry want to open new facilities in other countries to ensure supply. Vietnam is considered "1" in this strategy, with the ability to attract FDI investment and participate in all stages of semiconductor production, thanks to advantages in taxes, infrastructure and human resources.

The development roadmap is in three stages

Vietnam's semiconductor industry development strategy will be implemented through three main stages:

  • Phase 1 (2024-2030): Focus on attracting FDI, creating at least 100 design businesses, a small-scale chip manufacturing factory and 10 packaging and testing factories. Revenue target is over 25 billion USD per year and there are more than 50,000 engineers and bachelors participating in the industry.

  • Phase 2 (2030-2040): Develop at least 200 additional design businesses, two chip manufacturing factories and 15 packaging and testing factories. The goal is to gradually become independent in design and production technology.
  • Phase 3 (2040-2050): Form at least 300 design enterprises, three chip manufacturing factories and 20 packaging and testing factories, fully mastering research and development in the field semiconductor.

Central mission

To achieve the above goals, the strategy sets out four key tasks: developing specialized chips, electronics industry, high-quality human resources and attracting foreign investment. The Government will also establish a national steering committee, a professional advisory group and develop standards and regulations for the industry.

Opportunities and challenges in the global supply chain

The global semiconductor industry is increasingly specialized, concentrated in a number of countries and territories. However, no country is completely autonomous in its supply chain. Vietnam is considered to have geopolitical advantages, abundant and young human resources, along with significant rare earth reserves, giving our country the potential to become an important factor in this industry.

Vietnam's deep participation in the global semiconductor supply chain promises to not only bring economic development opportunities but also enhance the country's position in the international arena.
