Oracle Active Data Guard (ADG)

I. INTRODUCTION

Oracle ADG is an efficient Active/Standby solution designed to protect the core asset of any business – its data, ensuring data availability in a 24x7 operational environment, even in the face of disasters or calamities.

Oracle ADG provides services to create, maintain, manage, and monitor one or more standby databases, allowing the application system to remain operational in case of disasters or data failures. Meanwhile, these standby databases can still be accessed for read operations to support queries and reporting.

Oracle ADG ensures that the standby database is synchronized with the primary database down to each transaction. If the primary Database becomes unavailable due to an incident or requires maintenance, Oracle ADG will promote the standby database to the primary role, minimizing system downtime.

Oracle ADG can also be used with backup, recovery solutions, and clusters to provide a high level of availability and data protection.

II. FEATURES & BENEFITS

With simple features but practical for users, the Oracle Data Guard solution ensures data safety, availability, easy configuration and management, while also being cost-effective.

DISASTER RECOVERY, DATA PROTECTION, AND HIGH AVAILABILITY

The switchover and failover capabilities enable rapid role transition between the primary and standby databases, minimizing system downtime.

COMPREHENSIVE DATA PROTECTION

The standby database protects data from the risks of data corruption and user errors. Physical damage to the primary database is not transferred to the standby database. For logical corruptions or user errors that affect the primary database, repairs can be made. Finally, redo data is always reviewed and verified before being updated to the standby database.

EFFICIENT RESOURCE UTILIZATION AND COST SAVINGS

The table data in the standby database, updated with redo log received from the primary database, can be used for other purposes such as backup, reporting, aggregation, and querying. This reduces the load on the primary database, saves CPU resources, and speeds up data retrieval.

FLEXIBLE DATA PROTECTION, BALANCE BETWEEN AVAILABILITY AND PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Oracle Data Guard offers Maximum Protection, Maximum Availability, and Maximum Performance modes, allowing businesses to balance data availability with performance requirements.

CENTRALIZED AND SIMPLE MANAGEMENT

The Data Guard broker provides the Enterprise Manager graphical interface and the DGMGRL command-line interface for automated management and operations, as well as monitoring multiple databases within the same Data Guard system.

AUTOMATIC FAILOVER DETECTION AND HANDLING

If the connection between the primary and standby databases is lost, redo data generated on the primary database will not be transferred to the standby database. Once the connection is restored, any outstanding redo data not yet transferred will be automatically detected by Data Guard and transferred to the standby database. The standby database will synchronize automatically with the primary database without the need for database administrators' intervention.

INTEGRATION WITH ORACLE DATABASE

The Oracle Data Guard feature is built-in to the Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, so businesses do not have to pay additional costs for this functionality.
