The cybersecurity threat explosion: Should we be Cautious or Fearful?

In 2023, there was a significant surge in cyberattacks, causing considerable concern and alarm for both individual users and organizations.

In Vietnam, 13,900 cyberattacks were recorded, a 9.5% increase compared to 2022. Common targets included government agencies, banking systems, financial organizations, industrial systems, and other critical infrastructure.

The most significant weakness lies in human factors, with 32.6% of successful attacks attributed to lack of vigilance, easily falling victim to phishing emails or malicious links. Platform vulnerabilities (27.4%) and website vulnerabilities (25.3%) are also dangerous "loopholes" that need to be addressed.

The consequences of cyberattacks extend beyond personal and financial data loss, affecting the reputation and operations of organizations. Examples include government and educational websites being infiltrated with gambling ads, banks falling victim to customer data theft, and large companies being targeted with ransomware attacks, forcing them to pay to regain access to their data.

So, what can we do to protect ourselves and our systems from these potential threats?

For organizations:

  • Increase cybersecurity awareness among all staff members.
  • Regularly review and assess cybersecurity systems.
  • Implement advanced security measures, including 24/7 monitoring systems, activity logging, and the use of professional monitoring services.

For individual users:

  • Exercise caution when downloading apps, only using apps from reputable sources.
  • Avoid opening suspicious emails, clicking on links, or downloading suspicious attachments.
  • Regularly update operating systems and software.
  • Use strong and unique passwords for each account.
  • Enhance cybersecurity awareness through courses and seminars.
Cybersecurity is an ongoing battle in the global digital transformation. To prevent and mitigate information security risks, it requires collective efforts to create a safe, healthy, and trustworthy online environment. We all need to be cautious, informed, and equipped with sufficient knowledge to react calmly in case of incidents.
