Reality of cybersecurity in Vietnam: Over 90,000 vulnerabilities discovered

In the increasingly complex context of cybersecurity, security vulnerabilities are a top concern for agencies, organizations, and businesses due to the potential risks they pose. According to the latest statistics from the Vietnam Cybersecurity Information Security Department in June, 90,033 security weaknesses related to information security vulnerabilities have been recorded in agencies and organizations in Vietnam. This statistic has seen a slight increase compared to the previous three months, which recorded 88,990, 89,351, and nearly 89,400 vulnerabilities, respectively.

Additionally, the remote monitoring and scanning system detected over 1,600 security vulnerabilities across more than 5,000 publicly accessible systems on the Internet in June. Notably, among these, 12 newly disclosed vulnerabilities were identified, with a severity level that is considered critical and alarming.

To protect information security, the Authority of Information Security recommends that agencies, organizations, and businesses should:

  • Conduct comprehensive checks and reviews: to promptly identify security vulnerabilities that have been disclosed by experts and cybersecurity agencies and determine if they affect the products and services being used.
  • Implement timely remediation measures: If systems are affected by vulnerabilities, units need to quickly implement corrective measures to ensure complete data security.
  • Continuously update information: Stay informed about new security vulnerabilities and common cyberattack trends, and promptly deploy appropriate preventive measures.

Security experts believe that agencies, units, and businesses in Vietnam need to regularly evaluate their information security systems and proactively develop scenarios and response procedures for adverse situations. Additionally, they should enhance the implementation of cybersecurity solutions to actively scan, promptly detect, and quickly address risks, vulnerabilities, and weaknesses in their systems.

Organizations and businesses should strengthen their efforts to conduct regular inspections, evaluate information security, and continuously hunt for threats to identify and eliminate risks to their systems. This includes addressing new risks as well as identified vulnerabilities and weaknesses that have not yet been patched in the system.

In the latest guidelines on six key solutions to enhance the effectiveness of information security and quickly recover and restore systems after incidents, the Ministry of Information and Communications has also emphasized that agencies, organizations, and businesses must review and address basic security flaws to ensure the safety of their information systems.

The statistics and recommendations highlight that the state of information system security in Vietnam is at an alarming level. Organizations and businesses urgently need to proactively raise awareness and implement effective security measures to protect information safety, thereby avoiding potential risks that could cause serious damage.
